We strongly recommend that all horses and ponies be identichipped. This involves inserting a chip the size of a grain of rice under the skin in the side of the neck. The number is registered with a central computer and is a permanent form of identification.
Gelding
Routine castration of colts and stallions is carried out at the owner’s premises. This is normally done under standing sedation and local anaesthetic but can be done with general anaesthesia when required.
Endoscopy
We have an endoscope which is a flexible camera predominantly used in investigation and diagnosis of upper respiratory problems. It can also be used to help take biopsies and remove foreign objects.
Emergency service
If your horse requires emergency treatment we offer a 24 hour emergency service. You just telephone the surgery on 01892 541518 as usual, and the nurse on duty will organise a visit or advice from a dedicated equine veterinary surgeon.
Euthanasia
Unfortunately this difficult decision has to be made by most owners at the end of their horse’s life. All our staff are trained to deal with this in a caring and sympathetic manner. We will obviously do our utmost to do this at a time most convenient to you and your horse. There are a number of options regarding cremation or burial, and we are happy to liaise with the companies who offer these services. Please call 01892 541518 if you would like advice.
